3v3 Rules

TIME AND SCORING

A match will consist of 3 periods, each with an 8-minute running clock (no timeouts).  There will be a 2-minute break between periods.  A whistle will sound at 4 minutes to allow for substitution of players.

START OF THE GAME OR PERIOD

A face-off at center field will start the game and each period.

RESTART AFTER A GOAL IS SCORED

After a goal is scored the possession immediately goes to the other team.  The defending team may retrieve the ball from the goal and begin play immediately.

OUT OF BOUNDS

Play shall be stopped when the ball goes out of bounds.  The last team to touch the ball will lose possession of the ball and play will be restarted closest to the location the ball went out of bound and commence play on the whistle.  NOTE:  Out of bounds as a result of a shot on goal results in possession to the player closest to the ball.

GOAL CIRCLE RULES

No player may enter the goal circle except after a goal or a blocked shot.  At that time the defending team may enter to retrieve the ball and continue play.

3v3 field

The Field

The playing field is shortened to 35-45 yards by 60-70 yards. Because 3v3 has no goalie, the goals will either be smaller or have a shot blocker in place.

Penalty Administration in the event of a foul

1.      Minor (misplay, procedural)  When a minor penalty occurs the opposing player will be given possession of the ball. The remaining players will move 4 meters away. On the whistle, the player may move or pass the ball.

2.      Major (safety)  When a major penalty occurs. The opposing player will be placed 8 meters from the center of the goal. The remaining players will be moved 4 meters away. On the whistle, the player may shoot on goal or pass the ball.

3.      Cardable/Misconduct (excessive) For an excessive foul the penalty administration is a card.  For a card, a player will serve 2 minutes out of play for a yellow card and serve the duration of the game for a red card.  The cards are non-releasable.

COVERING THE BALL (minor)

Players are not permitted to cover the ball with their stick or body when an opponent is within playing distance.

MINIMUM PASS RULE (minor)

After a team gains possession of the ball, the ball must be passed at least once before a shot is made.

SHOOTING SPACE (major)

Defenders cannot obstruct the free space to goal if not marking an opponent or playing the ball carrier within a stick’s length.

ILLEGAL CHECK (major or cardable)

Any check above the shoulder or into the sphere or forcing the opponents stick into the sphere constitutes an illegal check.  Check to the head and a slash are mandatory cards.

CONTACT (major or cardable)

Contact that occurs that physically forces the opponent off her position or path is illegal contact.  Illegal stick and body contact (in a horizontal position) or any contact deemed dangerous should be called.  Check to the head and a slash are mandatory cards.

SHOOTING FOULS (cardable)

Players are responsible for not shooting at or into other players and to maintain a safe follow through on all shots.  Dangerous Propel and Dangerous Follow Through are mandatory cards.
